Later the gates were opened to allow refugees through in mall batches until the river stemmers had sailed when they were once more closed.

There were many regrettable scenes in Canton that evening. Numbers of unfortunate Yunnaness and Kwangui soldiers were dug out of their hiding places and brutally murdered. Some were thrown into the Defence Creek or river and paving stones dropped on their heads. These deeds were done by the mob and organised civilian bands not by the soldiers.
